AI Search Optimization for Contractors: Getting Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
By George Wright · October 7, 2026 · 5 min read

"Who's the best kitchen remodeler near me?" More homeowners are typing that question into ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode or other AI assistants, not just into a regular search box.
The answers these tools give often name only a handful of businesses. If yours isn't one of them, you may never know you were left out.
This guide explains how AI search works for local businesses, what Google says about appearing in its AI features and the practical steps contractors can take to improve their visibility.
How Fast Is AI Search Growing?
BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of consumers had used AI tools to find local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier, according to summaries of the survey. ChatGPT was the most-used AI tool for this purpose, used by about 31% of consumers, with Google's AI Mode at about 23%.
The same survey found that AI users still verify. Nearly all AI users said they double-check AI recommendations against real reviews.
Meanwhile, SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, which analyzed hundreds of thousands of business locations, reported that ChatGPT recommended only a small fraction of local businesses.
The takeaway: AI is becoming a real discovery channel, and most businesses aren't showing up in it yet.
What Google Says About AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google's guidance for site owners is clear: there are no extra requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same SEO best practices apply.
According to Google:
- A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link.
- You don't need special AI text files, new markup or special schema to appear.
- Existing fundamentals still matter, including allowing crawling, strong internal links, good page experience, important content in text form, structured data that matches visible content and an up-to-date Business Profile.
- Traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report.
In other words, good SEO is the foundation of good AI visibility in Google.
How AI Assistants Choose Local Businesses
Different AI tools use different sources, and their methods change often. In general, AI assistants form recommendations from information that is:
- Consistent across many sources, such as your website, Business Profile, directories, review sites and news mentions.
- Specific and detailed, such as clear descriptions of services, specialties and service areas.
- Supported by reviews, especially recent, detailed reviews that mention specific services.
- Easy to read, in plain text that clearly explains what you do.
Step 1: Strengthen Your SEO Foundation
Because Google's AI features rely on the same systems as Search, start with fundamentals:
- Make sure your important pages are indexed.
- Create a dedicated page for each service.
- Keep content in text, not only images or PDFs.
- Improve site speed and mobile experience.
- Use structured data, such as LocalBusiness markup, that matches what's on the page.
Step 2: Make Your Business Easy to Describe
AI tools summarize. Help them summarize you accurately.
- State clearly what you do, where you do it and who you serve, near the top of your home page and service pages.
- Name your specialties, such as "design-build kitchen remodels," "historic home renovations" or "commercial tenant improvements."
- Include concrete facts, such as years in business, licenses, certifications, warranties and project counts.
- Answer common questions in plain language, with FAQ sections on service pages.
Step 3: Keep Your Business Information Consistent Everywhere
Inconsistent information makes it harder for any system to trust what it finds.
- Keep your name, phone number and website consistent on your Google Business Profile, website, social profiles and directories.
- Claim and complete your profiles on other major platforms and directories, such as Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook and relevant industry directories.
- Update all of them when anything changes.
Step 4: Build Detailed, Recent Reviews
Reviews influence both consumers and AI summaries. Encourage clients to mention the type of project and their experience. A review that says "They did a fantastic job on our basement finishing project, on time and on budget" is more useful than "Great job!"
Step 5: Earn Mentions Beyond Your Own Website
AI tools look across the web. Mentions from credible sources help:
- Local news coverage of notable projects.
- Trade association member directories.
- Manufacturer or supplier installer listings.
- Community sponsorships and events.
- Industry awards.
Step 6: Publish Genuinely Helpful Content
AI tools often draw on content that answers questions well. Contractors have real expertise to share:
- Cost guides for your services.
- Project case studies with details.
- Comparisons of materials or approaches.
- Guides to local permits and planning.
Step 7: Test and Monitor
- Ask AI tools questions your customers would ask, such as "best bathroom remodeler in [area]," and note which businesses appear and how they're described.
- Check whether the information about your business is accurate.
- Monitor Search Console for overall search performance, which includes AI feature traffic in Google.
- Ask new leads whether they used an AI tool to find you.
Results vary from one query to the next, so look for patterns over time rather than single results.
What to Avoid
- Keyword stuffing or writing awkward content "for AI."
- Fake reviews. They violate FTC rules and platform policies.
- Paying for "guaranteed AI rankings." No one can guarantee how AI tools will respond.
- Neglecting traditional SEO. It remains the foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special "AI optimization" files or code?
For Google's AI features, Google says no. Standard SEO best practices apply, and no special files or schema are required.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Organic recommendations can't be bought. Some AI platforms are introducing advertising, but that's separate from organic recommendations.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
It depends on your starting point. Strengthening your website, profiles, reviews and mentions is a long-term effort, much like SEO.
